Walgreen to cut about 1,000 corporate and field management jobs

(RTTNews) - Drugstore chain Walgreen Co. (WAG) said Thursday that it would cut about 1,000 jobs, or around 9% of its corporate and field management workforce, through a combination of voluntary and involuntary programs in fiscal 2009 that ends on August 31.

The Deerfield, Illinois-based company said it is offering early retirement and severance programs to employees in corporate and field management positions as part of its "Rewiring for Growth" initiative, which was first announced in October. The programs will not affect store personnel.

Eligible employees under the programs will be offered to voluntarily resign or retire from the company with both severance pay and benefits based on years of service and retirement eligibility, W (continued...)
